Wilkes raises Pennies for Peace

Wilkes University students, faculty, staff and members of the community have raised $1,563 over the past month for the Pennies for Peace program.

The local effort was held in conjunction with humanitarian Greg Mortenson’s visit to the city on April 25 to deliver Wilkes’ Rosenn Lecture in Law and Humanities at the F.M. Kirby Center.

The Pennies for Peace campaign is a program of Central Asia Institute, co-founded by Mortenson. The organization promotes and provides community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.

A competition among the 15 residence halls on the Wilkes campus helped boost the total number of pennies raised. University Towers 1 and 2 raised $127 in pennies. Wilkes’ Education Club and Circle K Club each contributed $100 to Pennies for Peace.
