Brownies raise money through ‘Pennies for Peace’ drive
On April 20, Brownie Troop 4042 from Long Elementary School in Crestwood presented a check for $663 to Greg Mortenson, author of the best-selling book “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace – One School at a Time.” The third-graders raised the money in their yearlong “Pennies for Peace” coin drive.
Mortenson, a 2009 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, founded the Central Asia Institute and the “Pennies for Peace” fundraising campaign.
The troop decided to raise the equivalent of an Afghan/Pakistani teacher’s annual salary after reading the children’s version of Mortenson’s book. They enlisted the help of their friends, family and classmates to collect thousands of coins. The troop also held a garage sale to raise money.
The Brownies presented the donation to Mortenson at his recent speaking engagement at Maryville University.
