Bozeman humanitarian Mortenson honored
Bozeman humanitarian and author Greg Mortenson was recently honored as one of four recipients of the Common Wealth Award of Distinguished Service for outstanding achievements in the arts and public service.
Mortenson is the co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, which has established more than 130 schools, mostly for girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is also the author of “Three Cups of Tea,” and “Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books Not Bombs,” both New York Times bestsellers.
Other winners of the 31st annual awards presented last week in Delaware were portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz, actress Laura Linney and author Sir Salman Rushdie. The four shared a $200,000 prize.
Former Common Wealth Award winners include 11 Nobel laureates, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, journalist Walter Cronkite, anthropologist Jane Goodall and astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
