Donations For Afghanistan
The public library collected $410 in donations through a recent Pennies for Peace drive to benefit education in Afghanistan. The effort was one feature of Pembroke Reads, a library initiative in which Pembroke residents were encouraged to read a common book and attend events related to it. The selected title was “Three Cups of Tea,’’ the nonfiction book by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, recounting Mortenson’s work to establish schools, especially for girls, in remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Residents donated to the drive by dropping coins in jars left at the high school, the library, and First Church of Pembroke, according to library director Deborah Wall. She said the money will be donated to the Central Asia Institute to support schools in Afghanistan.
