Students raise funds for schools
Students at Magsig Middle School have taken to heart the message from a book they recently read. With the guidance of Amy Chico, the school’s gifted intervention specialist, more than 70 students read and discussed the New York Time’s bestseller, “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time” by Greg Mortenson. The book describes Mortenson’s physical and emotional journey after his failed attempt to climb K2, the world’s second tallest mountain.
The students learned about the culture, religion, economy and living conditions in the high altitude regions of Pakistan.
They were shocked to hear that many students, especially girls, did not have access to schools. They engaged in incredible conversations about the current political climate of Pakistan and Afghanistan and the presence of the Taliban.
They also learned about Greg Mortenson’s mission to promote peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan — one school at a time and that he believes that the war on terror will be won with books — not bombs.
Greg Mortenson set up an organization called Pennies for Peace.
This organization raises money to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Several students wrote speeches and skits and shared what they have learned with the rest of the school. They organized a school-wide Pennies for Peace campaign and launched a multigrade competition.
The grade that collected the most money would have their picture taken and submitted to local newspapers.
The students of Magsig Middle School generously donated more than $1,200.
The seventh-graders were the winners of the multigrade competition by collecting $421.78. They aren’t the only winners.
