Students collect more than $1,900

Students in Prairie Grove raised $1,990.91 to donate to an organization that builds schools and provides school supplies to youth in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The fundraiser was part of a districtwide effort called Pennies for Peace. Every classroom in the district was charged with the task of filling an empty water jar with pennies to donate to the Central Asia Institute.

In conjunction with the penny drive, students read the book “Three Cups of Tea,” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. The book addresses how the institute was started by Mortenson, and why there is a need for this campaign.

The campaign ended last week. Teacher Paulina Levy, who oversaw the project, said $1,856.91 was collected from the classrooms. The student council also donated $134.

The money will pay for essentials, such as paper and pencils, as well as defray the cost of building schools, according to the institute’s Web site.
