NHS seeks to raise funds for Middle East schools
Ottawa Township High School’s National Honor Society is sponsoring Pennies for Peace, a project committed to fighting terrorism in Middle Eastern countries.
Pennies for Peace was started by Greg Mortenson, who was mountain climbing in Afghanistan when he ran out of oxygen and was rescued by people in a village. Mortenson saw the village children sitting in rows on the hillside, scratching multiplication tables into the dirt with sticks. They had no teacher and no supplies.
Mortenson realized a life of terrorism provided money for families with no education and no hope. He decided to change this and started collecting money to build schools in the Middle East. He since has written a book, “Three Cups of Tea,” about his experience in the Middle East.
Just a penny buys a pencil for a child. Collection containers for Pennies for Peace are at a number of Ottawa businesses, as well as at Ottawa High home boys and girls basketball games.
