Teens promote reading

Members of Cleburne High School’s Teen Library Board have been involved in a series of projects to promote reading in the community and around the world.

“We’ve had a very busy first semester,” said CHS Librarian Fran Rader. “Membership is up this year, and it is very exciting to see what our students have done on our campus and through their service projects.”

On a global scale, students organized a bake sale that raised more than $450 for the Central Asia Institute. Founded by American humanitarian Greg Mortenson, the Central Asia Institute promotes education for girls in rural areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Mortenson’s book, “Three Cups of Tea,” which chronicles his efforts to build schools in Taliban-controlled countries, has been adopted by Teen Library Board members as the school’s book of the year.

“We’ve also had members participate in several volunteer projects,” Rader said. “They have given their time at the Cleburne Public Library and have donated books to CASA of Johnson County.”

Volunteer projects involving CHS library board members have included reading with elementary students who are enrolled in CISD’s after-school program and with residents at area nursing homes.

Teen Library Board members are Ryan Benner, Kelly Blevins, Bridget Chandler, Nikki Clifton, Alex Cooper, Ty Greenslade, Bailey Harrington, Lexy Hitchcock, Savannah Johnson, Baileigh Jones, Jordan Kelly, Sylvia Ledezma, Celeste Lozano, Drake Mathia, Hailey McNutt, Hillary McNutt, Steven Rizo, Katie Roberts, Caroline Rugeley, Phylicia Ulibarri, Vice-President Kari Smith and President Laura Wilson.
