Pennies for Peace fundraiser going strong

The Pennies for Peace Fundraiser sponsored in Parker by the Model UN Club at Ponderosa High School has had a very successful start!

In the first three weeks the total amount collected from all sources is $530, with the Mountain Lion pod at Sagewood Middle School contributing a full $169 of that! These amounts do not include two donations matching our first $100, pledged by Learning Rx and McClure-Hill, Inc. With everyone’s continued support, we hope to collect at least $1000 by the time our fundraiser is concluded at the end of December.

One thousand dollars would be a significant contribution, since the goal of the Pennies for Peace project is to build schools in Central Asia, where the costs are much lower than they are here in the United States.

This project was started by mountain climber Greg Mortenson, who was taken ill while climbing K2, and nursed back to health in a Pakistani village. He pledged to build a school in that village, where children were scratching their lessons in the sand with twigs. He has since built over 50 schools, and firmly believes that education is one tool we can use to fight terrorism.

Please continue to support this worthwhile project whenever you see our Pennies for Peace jars in the community. Jars are located at Ponderosa, Sagewood, Northeast Elementary, Hilltop United Church of Christ, IHOP, Squeeze, Learning Rx, Snip-Its, Hair and Nails Etc., Nicolo’s Pizza andDry Cleaning Station. We will be collecting to the end of the year. Happy Holidays to you all. Deb Dieter
