Mortenson receives 2005 Jeanette Rankin Peace Award

BILLINGS, Nov. 17 – A Rocky Mountain College center plans to honor the leader of a Montana-based nonprofit organization known for establishing schools in remote villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Greg Mortenson is director of the Central Asia Institute, known particularly for efforts to educate girls. Mortenson says electricity, roads and military action won’t change a society as profoundly as educating its girls will.

Rocky’s Institute for Peace Studies plans to present Mortenson with the 2005 Jeanette Rankin Peace Award November 18th, at the Alberta Bair Theater in Billings.

Rankin was a Montana native who became the first woman in Congress. She voted against U-S involvement in both world wars.
