Western Piedmont To Host 3-Day Forum On Education

Next week, Western Piedmont Community College will host a three-night forum to address education issues.

The 2003 Fall Speakers Forum/Ervin Constitutional Issues Program, “Opening Doors: Education in the 21st Century,” will enlist several speakers to explore local, state and international challenges.

The forum will begin with a presentation by Greg Mortenson, executive director of the Central Asia Institute. Mortenson, a former mountain climber, established the Central Asia Institute to build and fund schools in volatile areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

His presentation, “Fighting Terror with Books: Building Schools in to Promote Peace,” begins at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

J. B. Buxton, senior education adviser to Gov. Michael Easley, will discuss the challenges that N.C. high schools face in his presentation, “Turning High Schools Into Springboards for Success,” at 7:15 p.m. next Wednesday.

All presentations will be held in Leviton Auditorium on the campus of Western Piedmont in Morganton and are free and open to the public.
